Piano Care
New pianos and recently restrung pianos should be tuned 3-4 times a year and at least twice a year thereafter. Pianos that get heavy use should be tuned more than two times a year.
Pianos can be damaged by extreme heat as well as the cold. Ideally the piano should be kept at a constant temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and not to fall below 45 degrees, or above 90 degrees.
Humidity extremes are also harmful to the piano. Preferably, a consistent humidity of about 50% is recommended. Room humidifiers should be used whenever possible during the cold dry winters, and dehumidifiers should be used in the humid summers, or in damp tropical areas. Dampp-Chaser Lifesaver Systems are always a good idea to stabilize the humidity in your piano.
Direct sunlight (UV rays) can damage the piano’s finish, causing it to fade and crack. The changes in temperature will also affect the tuning. If the piano must be placed near the window, a shade or a cover for the piano is recommended.
Piano keys will need occasional cleaning. Use a soft cloth, dampened with a diluted solution of Windex and water, and spray into the cloth, and then wipe down the keys.
Never place any liquids directly on the keys. If the keys are ivory, it’s best to let the technician clean them for you.
